Community Recovery: Northland Utilities and ATCO Partnering to Rebuild

  • Community Recovery: Northland Utilities and ATCO Partnering to Rebuild

This wildfire season has been extremely challenging for our Northwest Territory communities and customers. In some areas, residents have endured multiple evacuations this year, forcing people to flee their homes, be displaced from their families, and sadly, some have lost everything.

Throughout these difficult weeks, the Northland Utilities crew remained in our communities helping keep the power on and providing essential electricity service throughout the evacuation. The fires, however, created substantial damage and impacted our infrastructure, with over 400 poles across our service territory burnt down.

Now that residents are starting to return home and the wildfires are becoming more controlled, it’s time to start the recovery process to return to more familiar times. And in times like these, we all need a little help from our friends.

Northland Utilities is a joint partnership between ATCO Ltd. and Denendeh Investments Inc. When we say “partnering to better serve our communities”, we mean it! Completing all the repairs in the impacted communities is a monumental task, but we are so fortunate to have access to support, resources, and supplies through our parent company and partner, ATCO Ltd.

On September 9th, our ATCO family arrived in Hay River and Enterprise in droves to lend a helping hand. Crews, trucks, and materials were all safely loaded and transported up north so that together, we could quickly and safely begin completing repairs and restore our electrical system before evacuation orders are lifted.

On behalf of everyone at Northland Utilities and the ATCO family, we’re proud to serve the community during this difficult time. We want to extend a huge thank you to all the firefighters, emergency crews, essential workers, government leaders, our customers, and residents throughout the impacted areas across the Northwest Territories.

Welcome home and stay safe, everyone!
