Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why is the transition to NTPC happening for the Town of Hay River?
In 2015, the Town of Hay River made the decision not to renew its franchise with Northland Utilities (now Naka Power Utilities NWT) and elected to initiate an open Request for Proposals (RFP) process to select a new service provider for providing electricity service. The franchise with Naka Power Utilities (NWT) expired on November 30, 2016.
Following this process, Northwest Power Corporation (NTPC) was selected as the new service provider by the Town. To become the new service provider, the Town of Hay River has to purchase all the electrical utility assets from Naka Power Utilities (NWT), and then NTPC would purchase these assets from the Town to own, operate and maintain.
Since 2016, while the settlement of the valuation of Naka Power Utilities (NWT) Hay River franchise assets was determined, Naka Power Utilities (NWT) continued to provide safe, reliable electricity service to the Town of Hay River.
On March 1, 2025, the sale is set to be finalized, and the utility service will be officially transferred to NTPC.

The transfer of utility providers is for Hay River customers only. Naka Power Utilities (NWT) proudly continues to serve our customers in Kakisa, Dory Point, Fort Providence, Sambaa K’e, Wekweeti, Enterprise and the K’at’lodeeche First Nation.
